Skip Bayless has never been one to back down from a strong take, and this time, his loyalty is louder than ever. As millions watched Kendrick Lamar rock the Super Bowl halftime stage, Bayless implied he would not be among them. And his reason is just out of respect for his old friend and rap legend, Lil Wayne.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the candid sports analyst put his perspective in all caps:
"I AM NOT WATCHING THIS HALFTIME SHOW OUT OF RESPECT FOR MY BROTHER LIL WAYNE, WHO OBVIOUSLY SHOULD BE PLAYING IN HIS HOMETOWN OF NEW ORLEANS. THIS IS JUST SO WRONG."
For longtime followers of Bayless' career, this move comes as no surprise. His friendship with Lil Wayne is significant, to say the least. The New Orleans superstar has frequently appeared as a guest on Skip's former FS1 program Undisputed, even writing the theme songs to multiple show versions. Their relationship is based on joint respect, and in true ride-or-die style, Skip brought his point to the timeline.
Ever since the NFL revealed that Kendrick Lamar would headline the Super Bowl halftime show, a fierce debate has raged across social media. The argument is that fans felt that with the game in New Orleans, Lil Wayne, a hometown hero and hip-hop icon, should've had his shot.
Though Kendrick Lamar's impact on his culture and lyrical supremacy can't be denied, Wayne's loyalists were vexed. After all, Lil Wayne is not just a rap heavyweight, he's an institution, particularly in NOLA. Because of his decades-long presence and the city's ingrained tie to him, people felt that the NFL passed up an opportunity to pay tribute to one of its own.
Bayless, never one to pull his punches, was certain about this. It's subjective, of course, but something must be said about his devotion.
