Brian Walker’s latest release, “VENOM,” captures the exhaustion of a relationship where attraction and frustration are constantly at odds. It begins with being stood up and waiting in a coffee shop, then describes someone unpredictable, provocative, and hard to understand. “Venom / Don’t like how I’ve changed” is the emotional crux of the piece, suggesting that the relationship is changing the narrator from the inside out. Walker’s writing brings out the images more clearly, from “Red lips that tease” to the exasperation of an impossible game. At its best, “VENOM” knows when to walk away.
