Melbourne's duo, Teether & Kuya Neil, returns with a love-drunk lullaby just in time for their debut record, "YEARN IV," out by May 2nd through Chapter Music. Their new single, "BLUSH," is a softly spoken but infectious bite of abstract hip-hop, playfully caught between the fantasy of romance and the burden of reality.
Where most love songs reach for the grand and dramatic, "BLUSH" plays it interestingly. Teether's laid-back flow glides open over Kuya Neil's woozy, minimalist production as warbler synths and a half-hearted groove build a dreamlike haze. It's hypnotic, charming, and, weird enough, an unorthodox slow jam for romantics who have things just a little out of whack.
The track comes hot on the heels of Valentine's Day, delving even deeper into themes of desire, connection, and all the awkward magic in between. There's a wit woven into every line, making "BLUSH" more like a playful commentary on the messiness of love, embraced by a beat you'll float on.
Teether and Kuya Neil have established a trademark signature of sounds that refuse to be pinned down, and "BLUSH" continues this tradition. It's hip-hop but abstract, pop but underground, and smooth but not without some unpredictability. And if this is a taste of what to expect on "YEARN IV," we're getting something special.
