Last Grasp pulls you into the darkwave abyss with lustful seduction in “Creature of Your Kind”

Emerging from Florida’s underground music scene, Last Grasp, the darkwave project led by Matthew DeFeis, is quickly carving out a niche in the gothic and industrial music revival. Since its inception in 2021, the project has navigated the sonic landscape of brooding 80s goth music with a modern twist, resulting in a distinctive, nostalgic, and forward-thinking blend.

The magic behind Last Grasp's sound lies in a cross-continental collaboration with Serbian producer Boris Stojanović. Despite the physical distance, the duo has cultivated a seamless workflow, fusing Matthew's Florida-based foundation with Boris’s atmospheric production. The result is a sound that captures the essence of classic darkwave while resonating with today’s listeners. This global creative synergy has solidified Last Grasp's status as a notable name in the goth music resurgence.

Their latest single, “Creature of Your Kind,” encapsulates this dark allure. It’s a track drenched in raw emotion, exploring the intense pull of infatuation that Matthew describes as “lust taking hold of the senses.” The song starts with piercing guitar riffs layered over pulsing synths, setting a haunting tone punctuated by snapping drums and DeFeis’s deep, brooding vocals. The atmospheric soundscape draws listeners into a realm where desire and danger intertwine, making it impossible not to be entranced.

With the addition of Jaysik Smith on bass and Lo Ormachea on synths, the lineup feels complete, enhancing the band’s live performances and expanding their sonic depth. As the darkwave revival gains momentum, Last Grasp’s “Creature of Your Kind” stands out as an anthem as captivating as it is haunting, signaling the project’s rise in the genre.
