Willem James Cowan's latest release, "Choke," is a highly personal story of the immediacy of breaking up. "Every lyric in this song is pretty much specific" to his mood, says Cowan. "The song comes out of the emotional haze of those first days. "Choke" is somewhere in between the intimacy of acoustic singer-songwriting and subtle electronic experimentation. Programmed drums were layered with "guitar, single notes stacked and recorded over and over to create a 'pseudo-orchestra of guitar strings,'" Cowan says. It's an odd construction, and it suits the song's emotional complexities, making "Choke" feel intimate, detailed, and quietly unsettled.
