The title is a strong metaphor for the end of a relationship that cannot go on, as shown in the line, "tourniquet the arm you held." "It was a rare time writing, it just all came out on the page," he says. It has an emotional immediacy. "Tourniquet" succeeds because it doesn't romanticize capitulation. It hurts, but it feels like the meaning of finally deciding to move on.
