Surzae's latest release, "Sanctuary," is darker in emotional theme, and the groove won't sit still. It's a physical pulse of live-band disco, funk bass, soul vocals, live drums, percussion, flute, and two basses beneath the chorus. The contrast hardens the land of its subject, stay too long in something that only takes, and have the courage to dance your way out. The arrangement is purposefully alive, providing the warmth the song's lyrics carry. "Sanctuary" sets flight in motion, emotional lucidity, and a groove for the floor. Dark, but not showing the way. Something about that tension is so sexy.
