Brendan John Roch's latest release, "
Step Inside the Circle," is a confessional on alcoholism with a striking beat switch inspired by Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Roch does not excuse the ugliness. He is ritual and temptation, shame and the desperate search for release, in vivid imagery and abrasive language. Lines like "You get a seven dollar bottle of Obikwa and a prayer and a Gold Night" give the story a startlingly lived-in feel. It's chaotic, deliberately uncomfortable, and turns personal excess into a no-wince, uncompromising musical exhibition.
