BirdyHop are back with their first release in seven years, “Empty Pages,” and the song has the feel of passing time without losing its melodic pull. Recorded almost entirely in a single day at Abbey Road, the track is a melodic indie rock number with a new wave edge, powered by bass, guitars, piano and mellotron color. The consciously loose live feel gives the recording a pleasing immediacy. But beneath that energy is a more contemplative heart, and the song deals with memory, absence and the things that inevitably move on. It’s a record that feels like a homecoming, seasoned by experience, the years away seeping into the song, “Empty Pages”.
