Big O’s “Blindfolded” combines a unique San Diego hip-hop perspective with the warmth of Lo-Fi and the grit of Boom Bap. Produced in association with San Diego rapper Benny Canales, this 10-track, 30-minute project looks at what it means to keep moving when the road ahead is uncertain. The EP was inspired by sobriety and born from ideas of uncertainty, isolation, conflict, nostalgia and freedom and it has a cinematic quality without losing its grounded hip-hop character. Every step taken through “Blindfolded” gives the impression that two artists are using music to document a chapter, rather than just chase a polished sound. The production is warm but gritty enough to remind us that the journey behind these songs isn’t always comfortable.
We begin with “Good Times,” and its nostalgic energy feels right at home in the larger meditation on memory and personal change that the EP becomes. The title hints at better days and the production allows that idea to unfold, providing an easy way into the project. At this point, “Day Room” takes the vibe into something more intimate, with the Lo-Fi and Boom Bap base creating a sense of everyday observation. The transition works because both songs feel like they are rooted in lived experience, not heightened narrative. Then “Lonely” turns inward emotionally, giving the project a more isolated feel. Its place on “Blindfolded” feels important because solitude is part of navigating life without knowing where exactly you are going. The production around it keeps some sense of motion going, instead of making that uncertainty a dead end.
“Heat is On” continues this, adding a greater sense of pressure and urgency to the sequence. This change in tone follows the introspective nature of "Lonely," providing us with a new outlook on the difficulties that run throughout the EP, injecting more vitality without losing its grounded sound. The last highlighted option, “No Chains,” gives a sense of release that works well with the overall movement toward freedom in the project. This song feels like a step beyond those restrictions, while earlier moments are about uncertainty, isolation and the difficulty of finding direction. Together, these five excerpts show how Big O and Benny Canales establish “Blindfolded” in contrast: warmth and grit, reflection and momentum, and uncertainty and hope. It is also important as a gathering space for San Diego’s hip-hop community, adding a local flavor to the EP while keeping the themes universal. "Blindfolded" is a concise yet purposeful 30-minute trip powered by soulful samples, warm melodies and rugged production.
